I have chosen to do a Case Study on depression because many of us suffer from depression. If you have had abuse, you, most likely, suffer from depression. Abuse produces depression. The reason is due to the fact that one must shut down one’s essential self. The body reacts with depression, at the least. I hope you will learn from this case study and it will help the lovely lady who provided it. I will call her Dawn. When I do charts, I attempt to build 3D person from the charts. I do the charts in a step by step way. I do one chart at a time. I meditate on it during the course of the day and insights flow .A professional chart takes me 3-5 days. This case study will not have the depth of a professional chart but I hope that it helps Dawn and other people. Charts, always, help me!
Let’s begin. Dawn has The Sun in the 12th house. The 12th House Sun finds it very hard to shine. We, each, need to shine. That is why it is so important to find a sport or activity for a child. One’s self esteem derives from a sense that one has gifts: that one has something of value to offer others. The 12th House Sun has a very hard time shining. I think we all do to some degree. I am taking singing and guitar lessons. My teacher tells me to sing loud and proud but I want to hide under the chair. I bring this up to say that the 12th House Sun has the natural tendency to hide under the chair.
The Sun represents one’s own ego, one’s masculine side and one’s relationship with the father. Dawn has a lovely trine to Mars which shows that she is a natural go getter. This will help to mitigate the effects of the 12th House Sun. She will be more assertive than the typical 12th house Sun.Trines are pure gifts from God, unearned and effortless.
Dawn has a Sun aspect which I consider classic in mental problems. It is Sun square Uranus. Uranus is a wild card planet. Sun/Uranus in trine functions like a person who is “out of the box” but not TOO out of the box. We all know those people who can get away with anything because they are so darn cute in their eccentricities. This is the trine but the square is another story. The Uranus square or opposition is painful. Have you ever told a joke that bombed? We, all, have. Have you ever put your emotions on the line, only to have someone shun them? Then, you have to backtrack like a crazy cartoon character? We all have and it hurts.
Uranus in square or opposition functions in such a way that the person’s quirks just don’t seem to work. The person most affected is the native, himself. I am not saying Dawn is a weirdo, anymore than I am saying *I* am a weirdo. We all are weirdos. It just matters how you use it. The person with the Uranus square to the Sun or Mercury lives with a kind of perpetual buzz and not of a good kind. He lives with a sense of low level electricity running through his wires at too strong a pace. Have you ever had a hum in your room from an electrical device which should not be humming? Have you ever had a ringing in your ears that will not go away. I think we, all, have. This is how Uranus feels in hard aspect to the Sun or Mercury. We have not gotten to Mercury yet but we will because it is the planet of the mind.
Dawn’s Sun trines Pluto, so she is a very perceptive person and this will help her gain insight into herself.
The Sun opposes Saturn at 8 degrees which is wide, so more ambient. I have a 7 degree Moon/Saturn trine. When my mind starts getting very high strung, which it does due to a Gemini stellium and an earth void, I can feel the grounding of Saturn. Saturn in positive aspect(trines and sextiles) grounds and centers. Dawn does not have a grounding aspect. Saturn in square or opposition to the Sun or Moon makes for strong self doubt, which is a factor in depression.
We will study more on Saturn later. Now, we will continue with the Sun. The Sun has a lovely 9 degree conjunction with Mercury. This confers intelligence, as well as logic and detachment. The Sun conjunct Mercury is a gift. The Sun combust Mercury is a curse, in my opinion. The combust is an exact to 5 degree conjunction. The conjunction is a 5-10 degrees conjunction. The Sun/Mercury combust is one of the classic aspects for mental illness. The Sun burns up the mind, figuratively speaking. In practical terms, the native thinks everything revolves around him because he is limited in detachment. This causes a great deal of distress, which is not his fault.
The topic of our article is depression, so we must go to Mercury. Mercury makes an almost exact opposition to Saturn. Saturn in hard aspect makes for low self esteem If Saturn touches Mercury in hard aspect, one doubts oneself, severely. I will give an example. Let’s say that we have a classroom situation and the native with the hard mercury/Saturn aspect knows the answer to the teacher’s question. The native may stew and simmer with self doubt. She may fear she is wrong to such a degree that she will not speak up. Saturn makes for a kind of shutting down of the avenues of communication which could, likely, lead to depression. Hence, this aspect could be another factor in Dawn’s depression.
Mercury squares Chiron at 4 degrees. Chiron is pain. That which touches Chiron will be painful. Hence, we see the theme of pain with communication repeated. Depression results from being locked into oneself. If one could break free and share all the pain of which one feels so ashamed, one could heal. Hence, any aspects which restrict communication could be factors in depression, in my opinion. We have looked at the Sun and Mercury and have found clues to her depression, very clear clues. It is not her fault! The charts helps us to see that we do not have to blame ourselves for that with which we have been given as a basic nature from God.
Dawn’s POF squares Chiron at 1 degree. The POF shows one’s good fortune in a similar way to Jupiter. Dawn has the POF in the 11th house, which is the House of groups, so she would have good fortune in groups but it squares Chiron in the House of Money, so I can assume that money was a painful issue for her. Chiron in the 2nd House represents a childhood without enough money. The fear of poverty goes deep. The poverty mentality does not change when one becomes richer. It is a posture toward life.
Mars in the 3rd House opposes Neptune in the 9th House. When Mars opposes Neptune, goal setting may be hard. The person may start a goal and then get lost by the wayside. He may have great aspirations but Neptune fogs what it touches so these goal may go the way of amorphous smoke. With Neptune in hard aspect, the native may get lost in fantasy and even addictions to the exclusion of reality. Neptune confers creativity but it, also, takes one away from the material world in the form of escapism. Some escapes are more innocuous than others. One would be better off eating chocolate than taking drugs. However, escape is escape and one with Neptune in hard aspect to a personal planet like Mars must aware of escapist tendencies. For Dawn, she may want to escape the harsh realities of life with an addiction. We, all, do( if we are being honest) However, for some people,it is more likely due to the make up of the chart.
Dawn has Saturn conjunct Orchus in the 5th House. I find a Saturn in the 5th house to be a depression indicator. This is due to the fact that Saturn cools what it touches and makes for self doubt. The 5th House is the House of creativity and fun, as well as romance. To me, creative pursuits are one of the few healthy ways to deal with depression. If one has creative insecurity, a major channel for releasing depression is thwarted.
Saturn conjunct Orchus indicates that many people close to Dawn have probably died, leaving her with trauma. Saturn will allow healing if one persists, so if Dawn has had this kind of trauma, there is hope for her in learning powerful lessons, if she does not give up.
I am limiting this discussion to depression in the natal chart but you can see that Dawn is replete with amazing gifts. These are the many blue lines, including the rare aspect of the Grand Trine
I did not discuss asteroids due to the length of this article but I am sure that asteroids would personalize the picture of depression as well as personalize the whole chart. I hate to stop here when there is so much more to say but the length of this article will be prohibitive if I add the above placements. I thank Dawn for so generously allowing us to study her chart! I hope you have gained something to apply to your chart!
